Student Assistance ProgramsWelcome to Volunteer Houston County's SAP Programs. Volunteer Houston County Student Assistance Program (SAP) targets student's academic needs and also promotes personal development, social and interpersonal development, and positive values and character traits. Realizing environmental and social factors shape a child's ability to perform within their classroom we implement afterschool programs that focus on all skills needed to succeed in school as well as life. Volunteer Houston County SAP offers after-school tutoring, mentoring and service learning programs to elementary and middle school students utilizing the time, skills and resources of area high school students. Our goal is to provide a safe environment for children to learn and experiment with their own skills. Understanding that the learning process is about making mistakes, we want them to learn to take the mistakes in stride as learning experiences so that they will not repeat the process in more life-threatening situations. In providing mentors, this will give elementary and middle school students one-to-one attention, and decrease some of the behaviors that are often the cause of poor performance. The service learning component is designed to reinforce values and character traits already discussed and taught in the classroom. Focusing on areas such as citizenship and patriotism, patience, compassion, tolerance, respect to others, cooperation, respect for the environment, and creativity we provide service learning opportunities that will also increase their self-esteem and self worth within their community. 2001-2002 SAP program pictures Volunteer Houston County Student Assistant Program's provide students additional supervised and facilitated opportunities to learn and to interact with others increasing their ability to respond socially in a group, and to work as a team.
